Day 2 waste free lunch

Since my life is pretty much lunches and tears right now I figured I would bring you another lunch post. I'm not sure how often I will be posting Ady's lunches here. At this point I am planning at least once a week.

Today's 8-29 lunch
turkey ham chunks
mozzarella cheese chunks
light ranch dressing
hard boiled egg-no yolk
balled cantaloupe
strawberry cereal bar cut into bite size pieces
60/40 apple juice water
waste today-none for her!
She ate most of the ham and cheese chunks. All the cereal bar and egg. Only a few pieces of cantaloupe.
She has money for milk but hasn't use it.
Yesterday's lunch went over well. She didn't throw away any containers(THANK GOD!) The only thing she didn't eat were the pears. They were brown and slimy. Need to try some lemon juice next time.

We have some prepackaged items but not a lot. A friend of mine said something to me that I never really considered before and that sent me into a frenzy of "what ifs". I am calmer now but trying to pack Ady's lunches in a way that is healthy, waste free, and cool. I never considered the "cool" factor of lunches. This friend feels that since most kids eat hot lunch that taking your lunch makes you stick out and then you factor in the healthy lunch in the lunch box that cost more money than most spend on clothes. In her opinion I am making Ady stick out. Kids want to fit in not stick out. They prefer to be like everyone else...so on so forth. I might be ok with being different, greener, and healthier than the crowd but I am forcing it on my daughter and it could backfire on me. I may not agree with it, you might think she is wrong, but that is the gist of what sent me into a panic. So we have some string cheese, and Dora trail mix packages.

The first 2 days of school Ady has liked taking her lunch. They had beans yesterday and potatoes today. Those are at the top of her most hated foods list!

Ady's not the most picky person in the world, but she does refuse to eat some of the more popular foods, like any kind of potatoes. I think she'll prefer to take food that she likes.

Another option to lemon juice for keeping fruit from browning is a 7up type of soda. I use diet sprite. The bonus to this is it doesn't give it a slightly lemon flavor, but the lemon in the soda keeps the fruit from turning. You could also use orange juice or pineapple juice. Depending on the fruit... make sure it tastes ok to the kid first :)
